General Information

The Australian Water Quality Centre offers a full range of microbiological testing and consultancy services from leading professionals in the water and wastewater industry for:

  • Testing of water, wastewaters and soils for indicator microorganisms - coliforms, faecal-coliforms, E. coli, faecal streptococci, and Enterococci.

  • Examination for pathogens – Campylobacter, Legionella including Legionella pneumophila, serogroups 1-14, aerobic spores, Vibrio spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella, Sulfite Reducing Clostridia and Clostridium Perfringens

  • Detection and enumeration of other microorganisms such as Aeromonas, Actinomycetes, total bacterial counts, Bacteriophages and Fungi.

  • Examination of certain anaerobes such as Sulphate Reducing Bacteria, including Desulfovibrio and Sulfite Reducing Clostridia, including Clostridium perfringens.

  • Detection of nuisance microorganisms such as iron precipitating bacteria.

    Majority of Tests with the Bacteriology Lab are NATA accredited.
  • A range of techniques are applied for analysis of micro-organisms, including traditional culture based methods, defined substrate tehnology and DNA technology.

  • The Microbiology of drinking water supplies – consultant advice and recommendations for monitoring programs.

  • Advice on disinfection of drinking water supply, rainwater tanks, sewage effluent and sewerage effluent for re-use.

  • Testing and advice on the microbiology of cooling tower systems.

  • Bore management problems - microbiological and chemical aspects

  • Testing of spring and mineral waters, packaged water and ice, swimming pools and spas.
