Karen Simpson - Senior Manager Laboratory Services
Karen has over 27 years' experience in the water industry having been engaged in various scientific and leadership roles across AWQC and SA Water spanning laboratory management, research, analytical, method development, consultancy, business performance, strategic and business planning and quality management fields.
As Senior Manager Laboratory Services, Karen leads AWQC’s service provision encompassing field and laboratory operations, strategic, quality management, customer services, consultancy and value adding from across its Adelaide, Melbourne and Port Lincoln operations.
Focused on driving service excellence and applying innovation to deliver world-class services to benefit AWQC’s wide range of customers and industries across Australia and internationally, Karen is a passionate public health professional, who works in partnership with clients to deliver value and support optimal outcomes for the customers and communities we serve today and in the future.
Dr Thorsten Mosisch - Manager Field and Life Science Services
Since completing his PhD at Griffith University, Brisbane, Thorsten has gained over twenty years experience in water quality monitoring, freshwater ecology, catchment and riparian zone management and consultancies in the water sector. He spent four years managing the Ecosystem Health Monitoring Program at the Healthy Waterways Partnership, South East Queensland, ten years working at major water utilities in water quality advisory roles, including South East Queensland Water Corporation and most recently seven years in the role of Source Water Quality Manager with SA Water in Adelaide.
Thorsten joined the AWQC in February 2014 as Manager Life Sciences with responsibility for the operation of the Bacteriology, Protozoology, Biology and Product Testing Laboratories. He leads the Life Sciences team, a team of dedicated multi-skilled scientists, in providing excellence in customer service delivery with a focus on method development, quality, efficiency and cost effectiveness. As of May 2019 Thorsten’s role expanded to Manager Field and Life Science Services, leading the Life Sciences and the Field Services team. Field Services is a team of highly skilled field technicians providing quality sample collection and field technical services such as calibrations, covering most areas of South Australia.
Thorsten brings with him extensive experience in research, consultancies, the design, implementation and management of water quality monitoring programs and providing professional advice on issues relating to source water quality, catchment management, water quality monitoring, interpretation of water quality data and the implementation of appropriate risk management frameworks.
Kerrie Jooste – Manager Chemistry
Kerrie joined the AWQC in 2007 as a member of the Inorganic Chemistry Services team after obtaining her Bachelor of Science (majoring in Chemical Synthesis and Pharmacology). During her time at AWQC, Kerrie has gained an extensive knowledge of Inorganic Chemistry testing; working as part of the Physical, Nutrients and Waste teams before moving on to supervise the combined Nutrients and Waste team in 2015.
Kerrie moved into the Acting Manager Chemistry Services position in 2019, leading a team of 31 highly skilled scientists within the Nutrients and Waste, Metals and Physical, and Organic Chemistry laboratories, before securing the ongoing Manager Chemistry Services position in 2020.
Kerrie has a strong focus on customer service delivery and quality, driving improvements and innovation through method development, method validation, process improvements, automation, and robotics.
Mark Harb - Manager Melbourne Laboratory
Mark joined the AWQC in 2017 with over 20 years’ experience working principally as a Microbiologist in various QC testing laboratories within a range of industries including pharmaceutical, environmental, food, cosmetics and agricultural.
In addition to attaining a BSc (majoring in Microbiology and Genetics) and a Diploma of Management, Mark brings with him extensive experience in a range of scientific test methods, laboratory management, quality management, new method development, validation, innovation, compliance, consultancy and a high level of customer service.
Mark manages the Melbourne operations where he is responsible for the Microbiology, Chemistry, Protozoology and Biology testing laboratories, and leads a team of multi-skilled scientists.
Michelle Howson - Customer and Business Services Manager
Michelle joined Australian Water Quality Centre in February 2021. Michelle is responsible for the effective management and improvement of AWQC’s customer services, quality management and business systems activities to deliver value and achieve a high level of customer satisfaction.
Michelle has a Bachelor of Business in Management and a Graduate Certificate in Organisational Communication.
Michelle is committed to understanding how the customer experience impacts all customers and to contributing to mutually beneficial partnerships that create real value while managing customer and organisational outcomes.
David Connolly-Hay - Business Development & Contracts Manager
An accomplished, pragmatic and solutions focussed business development professional, David joined AWQC at the beginning of 2021 and is the newest member to the Laboratory Services Management team.
David has a Bachelor in Management and vast experience in devising and executing business growth strategies and marketing plans.
David has almost 15 years’ experience managing local and international clients and their projects (through working as a Business Development and Program Manager) in a wide variety of complex commercial sectors, including medical pathology, mining and future industries (advanced manufacturing).
David’s primary function is to manage major laboratory services contracts and to ensure contractual obligations and value are delivered to our partners and achieve high levels of customer satisfaction. With a customer centric focus, David is always available to discuss service provision and develop tailored solutions to accommodate the challenges our customers face on a day-to-day basis
